OpenAI has an eagerly awaited announcement scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. PT, but it's working to manage expectations.
The event, described by the company as "a chance to demo some ChatGPT and GPT-4 updates," is generating significant interest. CEO Sam Altman teased the event, stating, “not gpt-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! feels like magic to me.”
Altman's message appears to reference a recent Reuters report hinting at OpenAI's plan to unveil an AI-powered search product on Monday, potentially stealing some thunder from Google I/O developer conference, which begins on Tuesday. However, the report also noted that the announcement date "is subject to change."
According to previous reports from The Information and Bloomberg, OpenAI has been developing a search product. The product, partly powered by Bing (given Microsoft's significant investment in and partnership with OpenAI), is expected to integrate into ChatGPT. This integration would enable the chatbot to search the web and cite sources, making it more transparent and less of a "black box" that returns answers of unknown origin.
While there is speculation about the nature of Monday's announcement, Altman's assertion that it's "not a search engine" leaves room for interpretation.
The livestream will begin at 10 a.m. PT on Monday, and you can tune in on the OpenAI website to catch the event live.
