Alibaba Cloud unveiled the latest iteration of its large language model, marking a significant milestone after over 90,000 deployments by various companies.
Jingren Zhou, Alibaba Cloud's Chief Technology Officer, expressed excitement about the innovative applications of the models across different sectors, including consumer electronics and gaming.
"We look forward to collaborating with our customers and developers to harness the vast growth opportunities presented by the latest surge in generative AI development," Zhou stated.
The newest version of Alibaba Cloud's Tongyi Qianwen model, Qwen2.5, boasts significant advancements in reasoning, code comprehension, and textual understanding compared to its predecessor, Qwen2.0.
Large language models, such as Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen and OpenAI's ChatGPT, power various artificial intelligence applications. These models are trained on extensive datasets to generate human-like responses to user prompts.
According to an analysis by the large language model evaluation platform OpenCompass, the latest Qwen model outperforms OpenAI's GPT-4 in language and creation capabilities. However, it falls short in areas such as knowledge, reasoning, and mathematics.
Alibaba Cloud released Tongyi Qianwen in April 2023, following the success of ChatGPT's launch in November 2022. An upgraded version was introduced in October, featuring improved capabilities in understanding complex instructions, copywriting, reasoning, and memorization.
More than 2.2 million corporate users have accessed Qwen-powered AI services, such as DingTalk – Alibaba's counterpart to Slack. Additionally, Alibaba Cloud has made several Qwen models available to the open-source community and enhanced Model Studio, its generative AI platform, with new AI development resources.
Chinese tech giants like Baidu and Tencent have also launched similar chatbots and AI models in response to the soaring demand for generative AI. Baidu announced in April that its Ernie bot has surpassed 200 million users since receiving approval for public use in August.
Generative AI is rapidly advancing the development of humanoid robots in China, where these robots could play vital roles in factory work and other labor-intensive tasks.
