Meta Partners with Lenovo and Xbox

Asus, Lenovo, and Microsoft’s Xbox—have already confirmed their plans to develop new devices running Meta Horizon OS
April 22, 2024

Meta announced on Monday that its mixed reality operating system, Meta Horizon OS, which powers Meta Quest headsets, is now available for third-party device makers. This strategic move comes amidst the intensifying VR/AR headset competition between Meta, Apple, and Sony.

Leading the charge, three major players in the VR space, Asus, Lenovo, and Microsoft's Xbox, have confirmed their plans to develop new devices running Meta Horizon OS. Microsoft, in collaboration with Meta, is set to release a "limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox," as stated in the announcement. Meanwhile, Asus and Lenovo are focusing on building headsets tailored for specific use cases. Asus is developing a gaming-centric headset, whereas Lenovo aims for its device to be used for "productivity, learning, and entertainment."

In an Instagram video on Monday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated, "It’s probably going to take a couple of years for some of these new [metaverse] products to start launching but [I'm] really excited to get started on this next chapter and to get this into your hands as soon as possible."

With Meta Horizon OS opening up to third-party device makers, the competition in the VR/AR space is set to intensify further, marking a significant development in the evolution of the metaverse.
