By late December, Threads was notching over half a million daily installs on both Google Play and iOS, a trend that continues to gather momentum. On February 25, 2024, Threads recorded a staggering 486,803 installs on Google Play and 342,228 on iOS, significantly outpacing X's figures. While X grapples with challenges stemming from its rebranding and issues like bot verification, Threads continues to gain ground, capitalizing on its momentum to consolidate its position as the platform of choice for users seeking a fresh take on microblogging.
In contrast, decentralized alternatives like Mastodon's official mobile app and Bluesky are yet to make a significant dent in the competition, facing an uphill battle to gain traction. Although Bluesky's recent public debut showed promise, its momentum has waned, underscoring the formidable lead held by Threads and X in the alt-Twitter landscape.
