Booking.com Unveils AI-Powered Trip Planner with ChatGPT Integration

The fusion of advanced language models with travel technology opens up new possibilities for enhanced user experiences
June 29, 2023

Booking.com, the renowned online travel platform, is set to launch a new trip planner feature on its travel booking app, incorporating the powerful capabilities of ChatGPT's large language model. This innovative addition will allow selected travelers in the United States to pose queries and create personalized itineraries effortlessly.

Starting from Wednesday, users will be able to leverage the trip planner feature, which combines the proficiency of ChatGPT with Booking.com's existing machine learning models to provide destination and accommodation recommendations. This novel integration promises a more natural and human-like travel planning experience.

Rob Francis, the technology chief at Booking.com, expressed enthusiasm about the AI Trip Planner, stating, "Our new AI Trip Planner provides us with some exciting possibilities to help our customers plan and search for travel options in a very natural, human way." By harnessing the power of generative AI and its conversational abilities, Booking.com aims to enhance the travel planning process for its users.

ChatGPT, developed by San Francisco-based OpenAI, has garnered significant attention in the tech industry for its remarkable conversational capabilities. The chatbot can simulate dialogue, respond to follow-up questions, address mistakes, challenge incorrect assumptions, and reject inappropriate requests. Its integration into Booking.com's trip planner demonstrates the growing interest and exploration of generative AI technologies across various sectors.

Initially, an early version of the trip planner will be rolled out to members of Booking.com's loyalty program, "Genius," in the United States over the next few weeks. This phased approach allows for testing and refinement based on user feedback, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience.

Booking.com's competitor, Expedia, also recently introduced a test version of its in-app travel planning experience powered by ChatGPT. Members can engage in conversations with the feature and receive personalized recommendations on places to visit, further showcasing the increasing adoption of AI in the travel industry.

With the integration of ChatGPT into its trip planner, Booking.com aims to revolutionize the way travelers plan and organize their trips, offering a more intuitive and personalized approach.
